BODEGA CATENA ZAPATA MALBEC NICASIA VINEYARD 2016 (2)

Mendoza, Argentina.
u. 2 x vts.1 x raised cork.

The 2016 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard is from a vineyard in the Paraje Altamira, which had the advantage of the good drainage of its soils and the benefit of the cooler year, resulting in some 30% less grapes. There also was more severe sorting that seems to have paid off, going back to a fresher expression of the place. The wine combines ripeness with elegance, and it's powerful and varietal, with a textured palate showing the limestone mother rock that provides a chalky sensation. October 2019 WA 95

BODEGA CATENA ZAPATA MALBEC NICASIA VINEYARD 2018 (1)

Mendoza, Argentina.
u. bn.

The 2018 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard, from a vineyard planted in Altamira in 1996 from an old massal selection, has contained ripeness, reflecting the less warm vintage (after 2017). The grapes were picked very early but with good ripeness because of the low yields in a very dry year. It fermented in open-top barrels with 100% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter oak barrels. It's a balanced and elegant Malbec with some restraint and a very fine thread in the palate, with really fine tannins. It follows the path of the phenomenal 2017, fine and elegant. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2020. March 2021 WA 98
