DOMINUS ESTATE 2009 (1)
Napa Valley.
u. bn. scraped label.
The 2009 Dominus saw about 40% new oak compared to the 20% for Napanook. A seamless classic, it offers a symphony of red and black currants, Asian plum sauce, lavender, and underbrush. Sweet Christmas fruitcake characteristics emerge from this magnificent Dominus that finished at 14.5% natural alcohol (slightly higher than usual). The seamless integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol, the brilliant length and overall compelling complexity and richness make it one of the great classics from this historic estate. It should drink well for 20-25 years. WS 93 WA 97
JONATA WINERY EL DESAFIO DE JONATA 2007 (1)
Santa Barbara.
u. vts. marked label.
The 2007 El Desafio de Jonata remains a youthful powerhouse at age ten, soaring from the glass with an extravagant bouquet of cassis, black truffle, cocoa, asphalt, smoke and cigar. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and very ripe, with an expansive core of juicy fruit that has lost none of its youthful vitality and conceals the wine's tannins almost completely. The finish is long and intense. This will delight lovers of powerful, sun-kissed California Cabernet Sauvignon, and now's a great time to start pulling corks. WA 95
SPOTTSWOODE CABERNET SAUVIGNON ESTATE 2010 (1)
Napa Valley.
u. bn.
Consistently perfect from barrel and bottle multiple times, the 2010 is one of the recent blockbuster efforts from Spottswoode. Superb aromatics of spring flowers, blue and black fruits, forest floor and a touch of toast, are followed by a wine of exceptional intensity, texture, purity and a full-bodied finish with velvety, but noticeable tannins. This is still extremely young, but also remarkably impressive even though it is only six years of age. Expect this to hit its prime in about 10 years and last for at least 40.
