BURGE FAMILY DRAYCOTT SHIRAZ 2005 (1)

Barossa Valley, South Australia.
u. bn.

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 2005 Draycott Shiraz presents a lovely, perfumed nose with funky, gamey and meaty notes accented with scented potpourri, dried berries, kirsch, sandalwood and toast. Full-bodied, the fruit is rich and concentrated yet nicely poised in the mouth alongside a medium level of velvety tannins, vibrant acid and a very spicy, long and layered finish. February 2013 WA 94

D'ARENBERG THE DEAD ARM SHIRAZ 2001 (1)

McLaren Vale, Australia.

Its dense black/purple color is accompanied by celestial aromas of melted licorice, graphite, blackberries, cassis, incense, anise, and toasty oak. Fabulously concentrated, with great purity, an unctuous, viscous texture, and an amazingly long, 60-second plus finish, this fabulous baby will need 5-6 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following 20-25 years. August 2003 Drink: 2008-2033 WA 98

D'ARENBERG THE DEAD ARM SHIRAZ 2002 (1)

McLaren Vale, Australia.

WA 93

D'ARENBERG THE DEAD ARM SHIRAZ 2003 (1)

McLaren Vale, Australia.

One of this estate’s flagship wines, the 2003 The Dead Arm Shiraz appears to be better than the 2002. A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple color, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is a classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz that should age nicely for 15+ years. October 2005 WA 95

D'ARENBERG THE DEAD ARM SHIRAZ 2004 (1)

McLaren Vale, Australia.

The renowned 2004 Shiraz The Dead Arm, fashioned from ancient head-pruned vines, is stunning. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a glorious perfume of creosote/melted road tar, blackberry and cassis liqueur, pepper, and spice. This deep, rich, full-bodied, tannic Shiraz should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and will last for two decades or more. It is the finest Dead Arm since the 2001. WA 95+

D'ARENBERG THE DEAD ARM SHIRAZ 2005 (1)

McLaren Vale, Australia.

D’Arenberg’s most famous wine is its flagship, The Dead Arm Shiraz. The 2005 The Dead Arm Shiraz is sourced from ancient head-pruned vines. It was aged for 22 months in a mix of new and used French and American oak. It is opaque purple/black with an expansive perfume of toast, smoke, spice box, mineral, pencil lead, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, opulent, and super-concentrated, this structured, lengthy wine will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and drink well through 2025. October 2007 WA 95

D'ARENBERG THE DEAD ARM SHIRAZ 2006 (1)

McLaren Vale, Australia.

D’Arenberg’s flagship is the 2006 The Dead Arm Shiraz. Opaque purple-colored, the nose is reticent but gives up aromas of meat, bacon, game, truffles, blueberry, and blackberry. Firm, layered, and complex, this beautifully rendered Shiraz demands a decade of cellaring. It will be superb from 2018 to 2036. WS 91 WA 95+

KILIKANOON SHIRAZ TESTAMENT 2005 (1)

Australia.
u. 1 cm. marked label.

The 2005 Shiraz “Testament,” from the Barossa sub-regions of Greenock and Vine Vale, is more deeply colored and glass-coating than the Covenant. It offers up a fragrant perfume of smoke, game, violet, lavender, blueberry, and blackberry. Rounder and richer, it also has more grip and structure, with 6-8 years of aging potential. Drink this powerful Shiraz through 2025. October 2007 WA 94

ROLF BINDER SHIRAZ HEYSEN 2005 (1)

Barossa Valley, South Australia.
peeling label.

The 2005 Shiraz “Heysen” is a blend of three vineyards. It was aged in 40% new French oak, 20% new American oak, and the balance neutral French. The nose reveals wood smoke, toast, game, bacon, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to an opulent, complex, and intensely flavored wine which merits 6-8 years in the cellar. This lengthy wine will drink well through 2025. October 2007 WA 96

TURKEY FLAT VINEYARDS SHIRAZ 2005 (1)

Barossa Valley, South Australia.

Cut from the same mold as the 2004, the spectacular 2005 Shiraz exhibits an inkier purple color as well as a deeper, richer, more nuanced style. Cropped at .8 tons of fruit per acre, which no doubt accounts for its awesome concentration. October 2006 WA 95
