DOMINUS ESTATE 1987 (1)Napa Valley.
corroded capsule
There were 6,500 cases produced of the 1987 Dominus. It is one of the great wines of the vintage in a year when a handful of California producers made profound Cabernets (i.e., Robert Mondavi Reserve, Dunn Howell Mountain, and Chateau Montelena). The wine is beginning to shut down, but it still displays a rich ruby color and an intensely spicy, fragrant nose of toasty vanillin oak, cassis, and cedar. In the mouth, this medium to full-bodied wine displays considerable tannins, fine integrated acidity, and an opulent, rich, spicy finish. 96 WA
DOMINUS ESTATE 1990 (2)
Napa Valley.
This spectacularly complex, rich wine magically combines the finest elements of Napa Valley (strength, ripeness, and full body) with those of Bordeaux (finesse, elegance, and complexity). The opaque dark ruby/purple color suggests considerable intensity, low yields, and great richness. A huge, soaring bouquet offers aromas of cassis, black-cherries, subtle herbs, vanillin, and spices. 98 WA
DOMINUS ESTATE NAPANOOK VINEYARD 1991 (1)
Napa Valley.
The wine's sensational purity and inner-core of depth must be tasted to be believed. The 1991 will be approachable young because of its sweet tannin, yet it exhibits the potential to last for 25 years. Perhaps 1994 will rival it, but for now, the 1991 is unquestionably the greatest Dominus, as well as a potential legend in the making. 99 WA
DOMINUS ESTATE NAPANOOK VINEYARD 1994 (1)
Napa Valley.
The 1994 is a strikingly thick, compellingly rich wine with the texture of a great Pomerol, despite being made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine exhibits a dense purple color, and an incredibly fragrant nose of jammy black fruits, spice, smoke, and loamy, truffle-like scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, with thrilling levels of extract and richness, but no sense of heaviness or harshness. This wine offers early drinking, yet has the potential to last for 30+ years. 99 WA
