JIM BARRY SHIRAZ THE ARMAGH 2005 (3)

Clare Valley, Australia.
2 x scuffed labels.

Deep garnet in color with a touch of purple, the 2005 The Armagh Shiraz presents enticing smoked meat, black currant preserves and dried mulberries on the nose complemented by notes of charcoal, mocha, nuts and spices making it overall a little funky. Medium to full-bodied with rich, savory fruit concentration, it is framed by medium to firm, grainy tannins that lend a taut and muscular character to the long finish. Approachable now, it should be long lived and drink to 2025+ February 2013 WA 96

JIM BARRY SHIRAZ THE ARMAGH 2007 (3)

Clare Valley, Australia.
1 x stained label. 1 x scuffed label.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2007 The Amargh Shiraz gives pronounced notes of warm blackberries and blueberries with nuances of earth, cumin seed, anise, black truffles, black olives and duck breast. Very full and voluptuous in the mouth, the richness is nicely supported by a high level of velvety tannins and lively acid, finishing long and layered. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2022+ December 2011 WA 96+

KAESLER SHIRAZ OLD BASTARD 2004 (1)

Barossa Valley, South Australia.
scraped label.

Kaesler’s icon cuvee is their Shiraz Old Bastard, produced from a single vineyard planted in 1896, and aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. The 2004 is a big yet remarkably elegant, deep purple-colored Shiraz offering notes of blueberries, black raspberries, and toasty oak, a superb texture, admirable richness, and a long, heady finish. There is plenty of tannin lurking beneath the cascade of fruit, glycerin, and extract. While accessible, it is too young to drink at present, and is meant to keep for 2-3 decades. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025+ October 2006 WA 95

KAESLER SHIRAZ OLD BASTARD 2009 (2)

Barossa Valley, South Australia.
2 x scraped labels.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2009 Shiraz Old Bastard displays a very pretty aromatic melange of red and black fruit, kirsch and mulberries accented with anise, Chinese five spice and black pepper. Medium to full-bodied, it has lovely harmony in the mouth between medium-firm, silky tannins and the natural acid line. It finishes long with layered flavors. Drink it from 2014 to 2025+ February 2013 WA 98
