Provenance:

Property of a Private Collector, Purchased 1963, Frank Partridge & Sons, Ltd., London (receipt)

Note:

Jean Boulogne (Giovanni da Bologna)’s original model of the Pacing Bull was probably commissioned in 1573 by the Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici. Susini was a student under Giambologna who refined his master's earlier more robust model. The model’s fine chasing and red-brown patination are consistent with Susini's workshop. The Frank Partridge receipt identifies the current lot as the work of Giovanni da Bologna, circa 1587.
