Note:
The painting depicts the “Middle Temple” located along the Fleet Street end of the Strand and the Thames Embankment in London. Middle Temple was part of a group of four Law Societies that formed the “Inns of Court”, an ancient foundation of English Law going back to the 12th Century. They were so called because they afforded residence to members, i.e. barristers, law students, etc., which they still do. Originally the site was the property of the Knights Templars and the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, hence the reference to “Temple”. Middle Temple was built in the mid 16th century and damaged by incendiary bombs during World War II.
