CARDINAL IN A CHAPEL, 1929
Watercolour and gouache heightened with gum arabic on paper laid down to a wood panel with the edges wrapped around to the verso; signed at “Roma” lower right, inscribed: “painted in Rome Italy/ October 1929 for S.R. MacKellar” in pencil to the backing verso.
Together with:
A preliminary pencil sketch of the subject work; signed and dated 1929 at “Roma” lower right; and a one page typed letter addressed to Mr. MacKellar, dated December 1, 1930, signed by the artist and dated from his studio at 54 Via Margutta, Roma, Italy for approval of the sketch for the watercolour;
A photo-certificate of the completed watercolour with the artist standing at the left, signed in ink by the artist lower right;
The artist’s carte de visite with letters: “Cav. Giuseppe Signorini Professore d’Acquarello” at “54, Via Margutta”inscribed with the price, “25000 lira/$1200.00”. Accompanied by two typed letters from Mr. MacKellar dated December 29th, 1929 and May 19, 1931 to Prof. Giuseppe Signorini, with another typed letter from the artist to Mr. MacKellar dated June 11th, 1930, and another typed letter package dated December 31, 1929 from the artist and the shipper.
