Lot Report

Provenance:

Dominion Gallery, Montreal

Note:

The accompanying book chronicles Mathieu’s artistic career as a leading Abstract Expressionist artist from 1944-1968. Since the beginning of his career, Mathieu considered himself a historical painter, working with abstract subject matter in a frenzied, animated quick sketch manner reminiscent of Salvador Dali’s Surrealist style. His mannerisms aligned his work with the American Lyrical Abstraction movement and he gained international recognition for his large scale energetic canvases as early as the 1950’s.
