Lot Report

Note:

This scene depicts a similar grouping of figures around a fallen soldier reminiscent of Benjamin West’s, The Death of General Wolfe, painted in 1770 where his figures are placed as in a Lamentation of Christ.
The study also relates to works by West’s student, John Trumbull (1756-1843), such as his “Death of Montgomery” painted in London while working under West in his studio in 1784.
