Oil on canvas; signed and dated 1841 lower left, signed, titled and inscribed by the artist to a label affixed to the reverse: “Eliza Jane Frere wife of William E. Frere to whom the picture belongs. Painted at Malta for the Rt. Honourable T.H. Frere who gave it to her husband (W.E. Frere) on his return to India after her death in 1844”
