Note:
R.J. Wickenden wrote the biography for C.F. Daubigny and was familiar with the Barbizon School. Sir William Cornelius Van Horne purchased this work from Wickenden in 1905 as 1 of 8 sketches by “Barbizon artists””.
Rousseau was the leader and most important artist of the Barbizon School. In 1833, a year before the circa date of this work, Rousseau made his first visit to the forest of Fontainebleau which affected him greatly. In 1837, he moved to Barbizon where he was joined by Narcisse Virgilie Diaz de la Pena, Jules Dupre and others.
It is evident by the artists in the Van Horne collection that he was very interested in the members of the Barbizon School and was influenced by them in his own paintings.
