Probably a sketch for “The Warren Family”, a painting Romney exhibited at the Free Society of Artists in 1769

Note:

According to Alex Kidson, there are quite a few known drawings for “The Warren Family” which is one of Romney's grandest early paintings.

This drawing is different in character from any other as most were executed in pencil. Kidson remarks that its hastiness is typical of Romney's ink sketches in notebooks of this period. As the drawing came from Miss Romney's sale in 1894, it may mean that the drawing in this lot was a leaf from a sketchbook in the sale at Christie’s in 1894.
