UPRISING

Welded iron with dark brown patination. Raised on a wooden base, titled "Uprising" to the artist's documents and to the original receipt accompanying the lot. Together with correspondence between the artist and the Batas; a photograph of the artist and Mr. Thomas Bata, autographed, inscribed and dated "Wash./78" in pen and ink by the artist; and newspaper clippings, one mentioning the dinner the Batas held for the sculptor at their residence while he was in Canada for an exhibition being held in Ottawa, prior to the exhibition traveling to Washington, D.C.

The lot includes newspaper reviews for Sehgal's first showing in Canada, including "The Ottawa Journal", Saturday, Sept. 13, 1975 and one from "Le Droit," Ottawa, dated 12 September, 1975.

Note:

This sculpture was one of two works purchased directly from the artist on the same receipt dated May 1, 1975. The Batas purchased "Uprising" and "Sadness." Mrs. Bata saw the sculptures at the artist's studio in New Delhi; he brought them with him when he visited Canada for his exhibition in Ottawa in 1975.
