Note:
This study relates to Marc Chagall's "Mondo rosso e nero o Sole rosso," (Red and Black World), 1951, a gouache, watercolour and pastel on paper pasted on canvas that is held in a private collection. There is a label frame verso for the company R.G. Les Cadres Gault, established by Émile Gault in Paris in 1936. They specialized in framing and the manufacture of carved wood frames and opened a shop on Rue Bonaparte at the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It soon became the go-to address where Picasso, Chagall and Dali all went to have their works framed.
