Sir David Lewis Macpherson, KCMG PC (September 12, 1818 – August 16, 1896), was a Canadian businessman and political figure. He was a member of the Senate of Canada from 1867 to 1896 and was knighted for his service to the country in 1884.

Hudson River School artist Aaron Draper Shattuck (1832-1928) was born in Francestown, New Hampshire. He studied art in both Boston and New York City and soon became a notable landscape painter, specializing in scenes of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In the summers, he painted in upstate New York and in New England and was part of the White Mountain School, an informal group of some 400 artist pioneers who worked in the vicinity of the mountains throughout the 19th century. He is known as a leading artist of the Hudson River School's second generation and for his small, intimate views of nature. He became a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1861.

New England’s Androscoggin River flows through the states of Maine and New Hampshire. It is 178 miles (286 km) long and joins the Kennebec River at Merrymeeting Bay in Maine before its water empties into the Gulf of Maine on the Atlantic Ocean.

Shattuck painted other canvases and drawings of the Androscoggin River and the river valley from 1856 to 1859. He summered there from 1854 to 1860 and shared an old farmhouse with Samuel Colman, Sanford Robinson Gifford and Richard William Hubbard. In 1859, he opened a studio in the famous Tenth Street Studio Building, forming close working relationships with his neighbours, Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Church. This view of the Androscoggin depicting the colours of autumn, Shattuck’s favourite season, is one of the largest of his early views and painted when he was just 27 years old.
