Provenance:

Bequest of Frederick William Gerald Fitzgerald to the Art Gallery of Toronto (AGO) as "Joseph Israels" on July 5, 1949;
Collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, ON, Accession no. 49/11 to gallery labels verso;
Deaccessioned from the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario to benefit art purchases at the AGO

Note:

According to Jop and Mayken Jonkman (curator of 19th century art at the RKD Netherlands Institute), this work is signed by another hand. In their opinion this is not a work by Dutch artist Jozef Israëls (1824-1911) but by an unknown Dutch artist of the 19th century.

CONDITION DETAILS

Canvas is relined. The stretchers are old (19th century). Black light reveals overpaint on the top part of the mother's body and skirting the baby. The signature is not that of Jozef Israels; the signature is dark and under a glaze of paint as examined with black light.
