Lot Report

Provenance:

Collection of Fred Ford, Winnipeg, MB

Note:

In 1970 a monumental Inuktitut-French dictionary, was published by Father Lucien Schneider, later translated into Inuktitut-English-French in 1985 and titled Ulirnaisigutiit. The work remains the largest piece of published lexicological scholarship on any Canadian Inuktitut dialect.

The present volume, “Eskimo – English Dictionary / [Author] L. Schneider o.m.i” was deaccessioned from the collections of Public Library Services Northwest Territories, Keewatin and is an undated mechanically reproduced facsimile of a typed draft in Inuktitut and English.

Father Lucien Schneider, know to the Inuit as Ijautilialuk or Ataatatsiaq, was a Catholic priest, born in France, who came to the Canadian Arctic as a missionary, in the late thirties. After a few years spent at Arviat (Eskimo Point) and Tavani (southern Keewatin), he moved to Kangiqsujuaq, Nunavik, and later on, to Kuujjuaq. He retired to his home country in 1974 and died there in 1978.
