Provenance:
Collection of Fred Ford, Winnipeg, MB
Note:
Paul Quviq Malliki’s artwork has been largely dedicated to the depiction of wildlife, a subject that he approaches with exceptional clarity and a talent for observation.
Malliki has received numerous important commissions throughout his career, notably an invitation to collaborate on the creation of the Nunavut Mace in 1999, a privilege previously shared by fellow artists Osuitok Ipeelee and Peter Pitseolak when the Northwest Territories Mace was first commissioned in 1955.
Malliki’s touch for the nuances in the physical posture of his wildlife subjects often evokes their inner character. In the present work, Raven appears quietly mischievous, the relative of the trickster immortalised in Arctic and Northwest Coast mythology.
