Lot Report

Provenance:

Shell Canada Resources Collection.
Private Collection, British Columbia.

Literature:

Patricia E. Bovey, Ivan Eyre: Drawings 1965-1981, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria, 1982, no.60, catalogue cover, illustrated.
Jerrold Morris, 100 Years of Canadian Drawings, Toronto, 1980, page 106.

Note:

The psychological constraints, tensions and conflicts of mankind form the core of many of Eyre’s subjects. Bovey writes “man’s inability to escape the confusion of civilization, (is) depicted...in his Wrapped Head series.”

Morris discusses such drawings in the section entitled “Disquiet”. The conventional portrait has become for Eyre a psychological portrait. Morris notes: “The Bandaged heads do not conceal physical wounds, but suggest metaphorically men trapped in alienation, looking out fearfully at the world.”
