WILLIAM GOODRIDGE ROBERTS, R.C.A.
Provenance:
Private Collection, Montreal
Literature:
Sandra Paikowsky, Goodridge Roberts, 1904-1974, Kleinburg, Ontario, 1998, pages 131, 169 and 173.
Note:
According to Paikowsky, Roberts remarked that when he first visited Georgian Bay, he thought that “all the trees had been planted by the Group of Seven.” The Montreal critic, Charles Doyon, praised the artist’s Ontario landscapes:”If Georgian Bay seems to be a geographer’s patch-work, Roberts has put it back together again in his own way.”
Robert Ayre, writing in 1952 of Robert’s Georgian Bay subjects, observes that “he shows his vitality less in strongly marked rhythms than in the slashing brushstrokes with which he not only indicates the surge of tree life and the patch of lake, but builds up, with apparent carelessness, the solid foundation of rock.”
