Lot Report

Literature:

Hugues de Jouvancourt, Suzor-Cote, Montreal, 1967, page 214, illustrated, for a similar subject in charcoal entitled Le Pere Girouard, 1913.
Laurier Lacroix, Suzor-Cote: light and matter, page 276 (chapter entitled A Unique Portrait Gallery).

Note:

Suzor-Cote produced an impressive series of works in charcoal depicting the retired peasants and settlers of Arthabaska. The artist, in a 1933 letter to Pierre-Georges Roy, Director of the Quebec provincial museum, wrote “I firmly believe that my drawings are perhaps the best part of my work.” Lacroix states that these portraits “...form a unique gallery in Canadian Art.”
