Lot Report

Provenance:

Dominion Gallery, Montreal
Estate of Douglas A. Berlis, Toronto

Note:

On an inscription affixed to the reverse, Hughes writes: “Crofton village is on the east crest of Vancouver Island, and is just out of the picture to the right. In the background is Salt Spring Island, largest of the Gulf Islands. The ship has probably just arrived, as there is not much activity yet. The weathered log in the foreground borders a parking lot, originally constructed for the longshoremen, but now a visitor’s viewpoint. The pinky-purple flowers at the bottom are a sort of wild sweet-pea.”
