Henry C. Campbell, Early Days on the Great Lakes, The Art of William Armstrong, Toronto/Montreal, 1971, page 113.

Note:

Campbell writes that Indian canoes with travellers returning from the west were steered with poles and paddles. The travellers, mainly fur traders and prospectors, had exciting tales to tell to the people of the more settled areas of eastern Canada.
