Lot Report

Literature:

Sam Borenstein, catalogue, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, 2005, pages 38-41, chapter entitled Montreal Streets.

Note:

Borenstein’s paintings of city streets are distinguished as modernist through his conspicuous attention to formal elements. The houses are geometric patterns in a landscape, elements in a composition woven together by the shapes of the trees, road and sky. Borenstein’s paintings of mundane city streets were similar in some respects to the paintings of artists whose work he knew well: Jack Beder, Louis Muhlstock and Ernst Neumann.
