This work was painted circa 1958 when Professor Engel was studying for his Ph.D from the University of Toronto. The sitter had obtained his MA degree from the University of Manitoba where he made friends with the distinguished German Professor, K.W. Maurer who in turn provided an introduction to Barker Fairley.
