Lot Report

Literature:

Marie Fleming, Joyce Wieland, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Ontario, 1987, pages 90-91.

Note:

Noting a large commissioned work produced by Wieland for the Toronto Transit Commission in 1978, Marie Fleming describes Barren Ground Caribou, which shares a similar subject with this lot, stating that, “Wieland’s largest quilt - approximately two metres by nine metres - is also the most illustrative. But it is so with childlike, gentle delight: fifteen caribou pause in their annual migration in a vast but somehow safe space... Indeed, the work has the clarity, the tenderness and the mixture of fantasy and innocence that is found in the illustrations of Beatrix Potter, whose books Wieland has cherished since childhood.”
