Lot Report

Provenance:

Private Collection, Quebec.

Literature:

William Kurelek, Someone With Me, Niagara Falls Art Gallery, Niagara Falls, Ontario, 1986, pages 351.

Note:

Returning to the trompe l’oeil format throughout his career, Kurelek’s mastery in the format is evident in “Two Dollar Bill” on City Beach. While living in London, England, the artist recalled relying on the sale of the works as a source of income. “I lived on three pounds a week from the sale of trompe l’oeils. These are very realistic paintings of coins, stamps and dollar bills which you feel you could pick up. The commercial gallery that bought them from me for five pounds, framed them, and then sold them at sixteen pounds.”
