Note:

Bates moved from Calgary to Victoria in 1962 and became a member of the Limners, a convivial group of artists who met socially and arranged exhibitions as a group. Considered a pioneer of expressionism in Canada, Bates reached his peak as he sought after directness, simplicity and intensity. Bates painted bold and colourful subjects of parties and receptions during the 1960s and 1970s.
