Lot Report

Provenance:

Private Collection, Vancouver.

Literature:

Donald W. Buchanan, The Growth of Canadian Painting, London and Toronto, 1950, pages 70-72 (chapter entitled “Lillian Freiman, The Sensitive Vision”).

Note:

As the artist’s drawing became more subtle and complicated in its elements, so also did the materials and techniques Freiman employed in her work, in particular mixed media. Buchanan writes: “Working with mixtures of crayon and inks, of both opaque and transparent washes, with pencil, too, and sometimes charcoal, she gains from various combinations of these media her most satisfying effects.”
