Lot Report

Provenance:

Sale of Canadian Art, The Women’s Committee of the Art Gallery of Toronto, Toronto.
Private Collection, Toronto.

Literature:

Joyce Zemans, Jock Macdonald: the inner landscape/a retrospective exhibition, Art Gallery of Ontario, 1981, page 211.

Note:

In a discussion of Macdonald’s works painted in 1958, Zemans describes that the artist’s “images rise or descend from the base of the canvas, or from its upper edge, to lie on the surface, where they breathe in the atmosphere of infinite space. The surging shapes and variegated colours suggest growth and life, and must surely refer to the microscopic images that inspired [his] investigation of abstract imagery.”
