Lot Report

Provenance:

Dominion Gallery, Montreal.

Literature:

Sandra Paikowsky, Goodridge Roberts, 1904-1974, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, 1998, page 136.

Exhibited:

4th Exhibition of Paintings by Goodridge Roberts, Dominion Gallery, Montreal, 21 October – 5 November, 1949.

Note:

Paikowsky quotes the Montreal critic, Rolland Boulanger, who remarked that “Roberts’ painting in the late 1940s had an almost disarming austerity, reminiscent of the work of James Wilson Morrice”. However, he suggested that while Morrice’s austerity was tonal, Roberts’ was based on nuance.
