Note:

Smith was born in Montreal and studied architecture and engineering at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia). He works in bronze and welded steel and designed the entrance gate for Expo 67 in Montreal.

In 1967 he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy and was a professor in visual arts at the University of Victoria from 1972-1975 and from 1993-1994 was visiting professor at McMaster University in Hamilton.
