Lot Report

Provenance:

Heffel Fine Art Auction House, Vancouver, May 25, 2005, lot 74.
Private Collection, Ontario.

Literature:

Victoria Baker, Paul Peel, A retrospective 1860-1892, London Regional Art Gallery, London, 1986, page 36.

Note:

1883 was an important year for Peel; his canvas La premiere notion was accepted into the Paris salon, a great honour for the young Canadian artist. That year, Peel spent time painting in Brittany and Paris before returning to Canada and painting in his hometown of London, Ontario. He garnered much praise for several works shown at the London Western fair.

In Girl on a Hilltop, the artist’s rendering of outdoor lighting and colour is remarkable. The careful positioning of the figure within the serene French landscape attests to Peel’s mastery.
