Literature:

Peter Varley, Frederick H. Varley, Toronto, 1983, pages 151-156 for other drawings and canvases depicting Eskimo figures. The central subject of the mother and child in this lot appears in another watercolour entitled Eskimo Encampment, 1938 (Varley, page 156, illustrated in colour).

Note:

Peter Varley quotes the artist: “The little Eskimo with their dark faces and quaint costumes of the women making them look like penguins…carrying babes in their parkas…”
