Lot Report

Provenance:

Acquired directly from the artist.
By descent to the present owner.
Private Collection, Ontario.

Note:

Renowned for his depiction of life on the Canadian prairies, the artist’s most praised western Canadian subjects portray children at play, usually in winter. King of the Haystack illustrates a completed round of king of the hill, the red-mittened victor having just sent his opponent tumbling down the side of the pile of hay, the hay spilling away from the leaning wagon.
