Note:
From a small edition of only seven, BDNE II (Bird That Does Not Exist), 1965 captures both the tension and dynamism inherent in Etrog’s work. His bronze subjects appear as organic, causing the viewer to question just how metal could twist and mould in such a lively manner. These sculptures are instantly recognizable as “Etrogs” as they are artworks inspired by worldly tensions: the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional; the calm and the excitable; the predictable and the erratic. This bronze, with its knot formation and distinctive horizontal emphasis, is a fascinating departure from Etrog’s vertical compositions. To fully experience his work, one must view the sculpture from every angle, witnessing the forms in a state of transition.
