Note:
Iceberg Reflection is a striking oil on canvas, presenting the peace and majesty of the Canadian Arctic, the white of the central iceberg a sharp contrast to the deep blues and greens found in the clouded sky and surrounding frigid waters. The reverse side of the canvas includes a second depiction of the icy landscape, presenting a sea of ice floes before a mountainous shore in the background. McCarthy’s Arctic paintings draw many comparisons to those painted by Lawren Harris. In the chapter entitled Heart of Vision Moore makes reference to similarities and difference between the northern landscapes by McCarthy and Harris: “In the monumental arctic visions of Lawren Harris, we confront dense and dramatic portraits of the surfaces of the north. These are idealized structures and through them we feel the idea of place – but we see it from afar. McCarthy’s skilful compositional manoeuvres invite us to enter, share and wander within the experience of the artist.”
