Lot 36
RANDOLPH STANLEY HEWTON, R.C.A.
Provenance:
Estate of the artist.
Note:
A close friend of A.Y. Jackson (the two had met as students at the Academie Julian in Paris), the artists often embarked upon sketching trips together. During the winter of 1927, Hewton commenced a painting expedition, which included a visit to the regions of Baie Saint Paul and La Malbaie. During this particular expedition, A.Y. Jackson and Albert H. Robinson were sketching companions of R.S. Hewton. This is one of several trips that Hewton would take with Jackson through the Quebec landscape, capturing the snow-laden villages before, and at the commencement of, the changing season. In La Malbaie, Hewton’s delicate and charming colouring of the cottages and the distant bay are complemented magnificently by the voluminous snow. Hewton’s composition captures an intimate nature that was so appealing to many of Canada’s great snow-painting artists. Written on the bottom stretcher bar of this canvas is the title La Malbaie and A.Y. Jackson’s own signature, underscoring Jackson’s presence on the trips to the region as well as the lifelong friendship that the artists had shared.
