Lot Report

Literature:

Naomi Jackson Groves, A.Y.’s Canada, Toronto/Vancouver, 1968, pages 212 and 216, plate 101, illustrated for a scene of Cameron Bay, Great Bear Lake.

Note:

Dr. Charles Camsell, geologist, explorer and later Deputy Minister of Mines and Resources and Gilbert La Bine, a prospector, were involved with the discovery of radium and silver at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake during the 1930s. This canvas depicts Camsell Portage, located on the north shore of Lake Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan, a small settlement from the early 1930s when the great prospecting rush began as a result of Gilbert La Bine’s rich strike of silver.
