Lot Report

Literature:

John Young Johnstone Retrospective Exhibition: September 17 - October 1, 2005, Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc., Montreal, 2005, page 5.

Note:

Painted in 1920.

In the catalogue essay for the J.Y. Johnstone Retrospective Exhibition held at Galerie Walter Klinkhoff in 2005, A.K. Prakash notes the “intimacy and restricted view offered in [Johnstone’s] panels…[the artist] pouring out the immediacy of his soul with a razor-edged passion.” A native of Montreal and once a student of William Brymner’s at the city’s illustrious Art Association, Johnstone’s small compositions reveal his ability to capture an occasion with all of its light, colour and sentiment. In A Procession, St. Anne de Beaupre, Johnstone depicts a religious procession at the basilica of St. Anne de Beaupre, a narrative vivified by highlights of red pigment and a luminous sky. Created en plein air, Johnstone’s panels are truly delicate windows into a time long past.
