Private Collection, Alberta

Note:

Floyd Kuptana’s lively, visceral images of otherworldly creatures and their transformations have gained increasing interest and admiration among collectors in recent years. Taking early influence from his cousins Abraham Apakark Anghik and David Ruben Piqtoukun, Kuptana developed a highly original style which included painting, collage, and sculpture. His work merges an often playful, sometimes ghoulish subject matter with a gleefully irreverent, at times even ribald humour.

The present work is substantial in size compared to many of Kuptana’s sculptures, and is a particularly well-developed composition. Notably, Shaman and Consort does not shy away from Kuptana’s irreverent charm. Although known for his shamanistic and supernatural imagery, the creatures depicted seem to be taking delight in pleasures not altogether unworldly.[1]
