Lot Report

Provenance:

Private Collection, London, ON

Note:

The important 1960 print collection (released in 1961) from Kinngait (Cape Dorset) contains some of the great masterpieces of Northern graphics. A remarkable 10 prints in the collection were from Kenojuak, whose explosive inventiveness dazzled collectors in 1960 and 1961.

Among Kenojuak’s masterworks included in the 1961 release were the iconic Enchanted Owl, and Dogs See the Spirits, the latter print also included in this auction.

Both Birds from the Sea and Dogs See the Spirits exhibit the sureness and fluidity of line and creative balance in composition that have come to be seen as Kenojuak’s trademarks.

Awarded the Order of Canada in 1967 and the Order of Nunavut of 2008, as well as several honorary degrees, Kenojuak Ashevak is the subject of two monographs and is internationally regarded for her contribution to the art world. Her prints and sculptures are found in important international collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the National Art Gallery, Canada.

The present print exhibits a remarkable vibrancy of colour. Carefully stored alongside Dogs See the Spirits, the pair were acquired together circa 1960s by the consignor’s mother and are available for the first time since their original acquisition.
