Provenance:

With Albert Jacques Franck Restorer, and artist, Toronto, his label verso inscribed: "Surface cleaned only and varnish reformed";
The Estate of Lois Orkin, ON

CONDITION DETAILS

There is an Albert Jacques Franck restorer label verso with the inscriptions "Surface cleaned only old varnish reformed" and "September." Mid-20th century varnish is crystallizing; there are two circular spots of varnish that have a crusty-looking, crystalized quality upper left. The panel is slightly warped and the has a small knot in the wood verso that has chipped away. There is a number "5" inscribed in black crayon verso. The frame is period, stepped and appropriate to the work. The painting has a symbolic feel; the mother’s eyes are closed, etc. It would benefit from a cleaning.

Ultraviolet light examination: old varnish overall with light vertical blacks showing but that should disappear if cleaned as the varnish is crystallizing.
