Note:
This study ca. 1790 by John Flaxman could be a preparatory study for a later portfolio The Odyssey or The Iliad, published in 1805.
According to the Royal Academy: "As with Flaxman's drawings for The Odyssey and The Iliad, most of these illustrations are drawn in pen and ink over pencil. A number of these examples indicate how Flaxman experimented with poses and details in pencil before going over the composition in pen and ink."[1]
This drawing was part of the Collection of Christopher Powney. In 1976, Powney presented at the Heim Gallery in London a groundbreaking exhibition on the works of Flaxman.
