Note:

This drawing, which dates from the artist's first visit to Castle Acre in 1804, relates closely to a pencil drawing of Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire (Colman Bequest, Castle Museum, Norwich). The Fountains Abbey drawing is slightly larger than the present work, measuring 144 by 10% in., thus indicating that this sheet has at some stage been cut and the signature adhered to the surviving drawing. Cotman drew this subject on at least two other occasions; there is a pencil drawing in the British Museum (1902-5-14-290) and a watercolour in Bradford Art Gallery. He also executed etchings of the Castle from the south east and the front.
