Provenance:

Private Collection, purchased in London, UK, sold by the grandson of a prominent Montreal businessman who said his grandfather acquired the painting in London sometime between 1910-1914 and has remained in their family until sold at Waddington's;
Waddington's, Toronto, December 1993;
Estate of W.A. Ross MacFadden, Toronto

Note:

Mr. MacFadden researched this oil extensively with the UK’s top George Morland art historians and experts of the day. His files are abundant in correspondence showing his dogged pursuit of a definitive source for the painting from old auction house catalogues, etc. in hopes of tracking further provenance that would verify the work’s authorship. Eventually, MacFadden determined that this lot was not an original painting by Morland but rather one executed by a follower.
