An old biography verso states this work was “Painted during the artist’s second period, after the first visit to Italy, c. 1635. This is believed to be one of the earliest self portraits of the six known in existence done in a firm and powerful manner”.
However, this lot is similar to Jacques Etienne Pannier’s etching entitled “Posthumous portrait of Velazquez” of 1848 in the Prado
