UNIDENTIFIED ARTIST

Additional Images

Provenance:
Private collection, Ontario
Note:
Here, in this work by an unidentified artist, a team of somewhat mischievous-looking sled dogs recline alongside their owner’s qamutik (sled) while he attempts to rouse them. The group is finely rendered in the soft tactile stone sometimes used in Kugluktuk (Coppermine).
One of a handful of sculptures in this auction acquired by Hugo Vaes in the mid-1950s while stationed in the Arctic alongside the Canadian Army. All of the works collected by Vaes are notable for their detailed and carefully executed carving. Please note the contemporary photograph of Mr. Vaes shown here for reference.
