The Shaughnessy family of Montreal and St. Andrews, NB were connected to the Canadian Pacific Railway and were among the early patrons and supporters of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

“Sleepy Hollow, New York” (1885) is mentioned as one of two Barbizon-influenced paintings donated by Mrs. Mais, the other being, Lot 14 in this auction by the American artist Richard Pauli (active ca. 1855-1892)
